GFK Starterset: die Vorderseiten der vier A5-Handkarten

The NVC Starter Set in use: the four cards and when to use each one

The NVC Starter Set contains four double-sided A5 cards with eight topics. Depending on the conversation, you choose a different design: feedback, values and judgments, empathy, or self-empathy. We use the cards as an overview and formulation aid, so the appropriate structure is available in the moment.

Card 1: Feedback, observation, and requests

The first card guides you through a feedback conversation in five steps. On the reverse, it presents observation instead of interpretation and concrete requests, supplemented by example pairs for reformulation. It is useful just before you approach a colleague about a specific situation. For more in-depth information, you can read the Impact Institute articles on feedback without attack and observation without evaluation.

Card 2: Translating values and judgments

On the front, you will find the needs map for good cooperation. On the back, the upside-down method takes you from a judgment such as “You’re really sloppy!” to a need such as “I need order and structure.” This card is useful when the conversation has become nothing but evaluation. The background is provided in the article Translating Judgments.

Card 3: Empathy and conflict support

The Empathy Toolbox contains seven questions that create connection. On the reverse are questions for supporting conflicts involving two people in dispute. Take this card when you want to listen to a colleague, friend, or team member and need concrete guidance. You can find more about listening at Empathic Listening.

Card 4: Self-empathy and the feelings compass

The fourth card combines the first-aid kit for guilt, shame, and anger with the feelings compass of four quadrants. It is intended for your own clarification when, after receiving criticism, you first want to sort out what is going on inside you. The article Naming Feelings explains the background in more detail.

For teams and practice groups

If several people need the same overview, each design is available as an individual NVC hand card. The minimum quantity is five per design. At 20 cards, the unit price drops to 1.50 euros. The complete Starter Set costs 10 euros for one person.

A card does not replace practice. It reminds you of a structure and offers wording support when your mind goes blank in conversation. If you first want to learn the basics, read the overview of Nonviolent Communication beforehand.
